Minimally Invasive Surgey

Minimally invasive or less invasive techniques, such as Arthroscopy, are already the approach of choice for many types of surgery at OSU Sports Medicine. OSU is on the cutting edge of less invasive surgical technology and has one of the largest minimally invasive surgical practices in the state of Ohio. Surgeons at OSU's Wexner Medical Center perform thousands of arthroscopic procedures each year. The majority of these operations is done on an outpatient basis or requires only an overnight hospital stay.

What are the advantages of minimally invasive surgery?

The advantages of minimally invasive surgery are in the name. Smaller incisions and less disturbance of the normal anatomy leads to, for most patients, significantly less postoperative pain, a shorter hospital stay, decreased risk of infection, faster recovery, and, in some cases, a better overall outcome. Advantages are significant and have led to a lot of changes in the way we treat joint problems.

How long is the hospital stay?

In general it is performed as an outpatient procedure where a patient will arrive in the morning, have surgery and go home the same day. If the surgery is more involved than what was previously thought or if patients have some underlying medical conditions, it may be necessary for them to spend the night in the hospital. But in general most patients can go home the same day as their surgery.

Why should patients consider coming to OSU Sports Medicine for surgery?

Minimally invasive joint surgeries can be complex procedures. They require a skilled orthopaedic surgeon specifically trained in MIS, a dedicated team of anesthesia doctors to care for patients during the surgery, and a network of skilled physical therapists who understand the principles of a successful rehabilitation program.
